It may not be very convenient or palatable for those in our line of work but the fact is that going skiing is not “eco-friendly”. We need to do a lot more to tackle climate change as effectively we are trying to get people to travel large distances, stay in heated chalets with hot tubs and eat our food so we need to do everything we can to minimise the footprint this leaves behind. After all, not only is it the right thing to do but it’s also existential to our entire business and way of life as without reliable snow cover we have no business. And even though we are lucky enough to run chalets that are all in high altitude locations this doesn’t mean we can bury our heads in the snow and put this is in the “too hard” or “future problem” pile.
So, after lengthy consultation with the incredible folk at Protect Our Winters we have taken the “POW pledge” which is a series of commitments and benchmarks that we must now achieve by the pledged dates which you can find below, eventually culminating in Net Zero as soon as we possibly can. This will not be easy to achieve but we are determined to make it happen. Please check out the page on Protect our winters and feel free to drop us a line with any questions you may have.
As much as we’d love to promise that we can make every change necessary to achieve net zero immediately, these things take time, money and careful planning as its an absolute minefield involving our entire supply chain and we’ll no doubt make mistakes along the way. Some of the dates we have set are much further into the future than we hope to actually achieve them but we thought it better to put some sort of date on these things and then work to shorten them rather than commit ourselves to unattainable targets before we’ve had time to fully understand the realistic timeframes involved whilst also ensuring our small business can absorb the ongoing extra costs involved with making the necessary changes required to reach these targets. However, in addition to our pledge, here are a few small but important things we are already doing and/or are set to implement to help try to turn this thing around (This list is by no means exhaustive as we’re adding things all the time):
–> We work with BrewDog to bring you the Alps’ only official BrewDog Craft Beer Chalet Honesty Bars. BrewDog are the world’s first carbon negative beer company which means that for every gram of carbon they emit they take double that back out of the atmosphere! We also offer a free crate of 24 Brewdog Beers to each adult guest who travels to us (and back) by train instead of flying (for children we offer a £30 per child discount on ski hire booked through Alpoholics) but you MUST actively tell us this 2 weeks before arrival in order to receive your free beer and/or child discount.
–> Our first fully electric vehicle has been purchased and will eliminate around 8000 miles worth of tailpipe emissions per year. Furthermore, we now have an electric van to power our rental fleet makign us fully zero emissions!
–> We have partnered with “Who Gives a Crap?” to replace all of our toilet rolls with their super eco recycled toilet rolls.
–> We have sourced as much of our staff uniform as possible sustainably so our Bro! fleeces are made from 100% recycled polyester made from plastic bottles, tee shirts from Organic cotton and beanie hats form recycled cotton also.
–> We will be using Butta Wax for all of our rental skis and snowboards (as well as our own of course!) as its low in flurocarbons and therefore a lot better for the environment than traditional waxes.
–> We use “Eco Eggs“ for our in-chalet laundry.
–> Our wine comes from a shop just down the mountain in Aime minimising the distance it has to travel to us from supplier.
–> We will be using Phosphate free dishwasher tablets.
–> We provide “Faith In Nature” hand wash and shower gel in all chalets as we want to reduce how much people have to bring with them and also cut down on all the plastic bottles we have to throw away every week.
–> We pre-sort our recycling so that only items which cannot be recycled go to landfill.
–> We will reuse all our shopping bags so that we are not getting new bags every time we go to the supermarket
–> We already use energy saving lightbulbs wherever possible throughout our chalets and staff accommodation. This is not only better for the planet but also our wallets too so a no-brainer!
–> Replacing sponges with Skoy Scrubers – a reusable scruber made from off cuts from the towel industry and a food grade non-toxic hardener. They are washabe, reusable and outlast any normal sponge so minimise waste!
–> We no longer use clingfilm, and instead use Plantwrap, reusable silicon bags, lids and food containers in our chalets.
–> We’re swtiching to OceanSaver cleaner refill drops. These are eco-friendly zero-waste cleaner refills that are made from vegan and plant-based ingredients which are palm oil free. The sustainable refill pods are plastic free so are biodegradable, and they are lightweight and easy to transport which means fewer trucks on the road, helping to reduce carbon emissions! Win win!
